LIHI plans new units at old building

SEATTLE — The Low Income Housing Institute acquired the Jensen Block, at 601 Eastlake Ave E., three decades ago. The 29-unit apartment building, with retail at grade, was then already landmarked. It was developed in 1908 on the sloping corner of Mercer Street, and rises three stories above Eastlake.

Now there's a new plan from LIHI and SMR Architects to put a midrise addition on the west parking lot. That could double the residential capacity to about 60 units. All the old parking would disappear.
