Seattle's vacant buildings face the wrecking ball

A three-alarm fire at this vacant First Hill apartment building in January resulted in the shutdown of a major arterial for several weeks.

Over 40 of Seattle's vacant buildings could meet the wrecking ball following new emergency legislation recently submitted by Mayor Bruce Harrell to the City Council. The legislation aims to amend the current Seattle Fire Code to allow the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) to order and complete demolition or remediation of vacant buildings it deems unsafe.
