There wasn't an announcement, but work began in Kirkland about two months ago on the Kraken Community Iceplex. That's replacing the old Houghton Park & Ride property, owned by the city, with 6920 116th Ave. N.E. its legacy address.
The DJC paid a visit last weekend, and found the earthwork well underway, with some concrete foundations already in place. BNBuilders has its signage on the fencing, with several portable field offices on the 5-acre site. That property is east of Interstate 405, at Exit 18, near the Northeast 72nd Place overpass.
Generator Studio designed the roughly 80,000-squre-foot building for the Kraken and Seattle Hockey Partners. Completion is anticipated in the late fall of next year. It's a rapid schedule for a mostly pre-engineered metal structure. Those steel members haven't yet been delivered to the site. They'll come courtesy of Forge Building Co., of Boise.
The city values the privately funded project at $60 million, and is ground leasing the property to the development team. When delivered, it's to have two rinks, various amenities and space for community events.
Similar to the Kraken's Northgate iceplex, the Kirkland facility will host youth hockey teams, skating lessons and more. The city will have community space within the building; a food concession of some kind is also likely. The official moniker is the Kraken Iceplex & Kirkland Community Center.
