It's Construction Suicide Prevention Week

Suicide prevention is an important worker safety and health issue in the construction industry.

Construction Suicide Prevention Week runs this week, from Sept. 14 to 18, and is a time for employers, workers, unions and safety professionals to talk about mental health and suicide prevention — and to make sure workers know where to turn for help.

Construction consistently ranks among the industries with the highest suicide rates in the country. That makes suicide prevention an important worker safety and health issue.

The state Department of Labor and Industries joined construction employers and workers and other departments and organizations across the country for a one-minute moment of silence at 11:50 a.m. on Monday. The Construction Suicide Prevention Week National Stand-Down is a time to remember construction workers who have died by suicide and renew our commitment to preventing future deaths.

Suicide prevention is part of workplace safety and health. L&I suggested ways that employers, supervisors, coworkers and safety professionals can all help create a workplace where people feel supported and know where to turn for help:

• Talk about suicide prevention or mental health at a safety meeting

• Share suicide prevention resources with workers and supervisors

• Make sure workers know how to use your Employee Assistance Program or other available mental health resources

• Help supervisors and workers learn how to recognize when someone may be struggling and how to connect them with help

• Join the National Stand-Down

• Register with CSPW for additional activities and resources
