Portland-based Standard Insurance (The Standard) announced that Micah Rubenstein has been promoted to assistant vice president of long term disability claims and disability management resources. Rubenstein started his career at The Standard in 1995. He has held a variety of leadership roles in employee benefits on the LTD regional and national teams as well as various specialized LTD and individual disability income claims teams. Most recently, he was senior director of disability benefits. In his new role, Rubenstein will be responsible for LTD claims and disability management resources including clinical administration and the special investigation unit. In business since 1906, the Standard is a family of companies providing financial protection products and services for employers and individuals.

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has recognized Seymour Goldstein, engineering fellow/principal engineer in the Advanced Development Group at Fluke Networks, in its TIA Star Awards. The awards recognize TIA's most active companies and individuals for their contributions to the advancement of TIA and industry objectives and initiatives. TIA recognized Goldstein as being in the top 5% of individual TIA participants regarding engagement, leadership, and contribution across all TIA committees. Goldstein is a globally recognized expert on test and measurement for fiber optic communication cabling. He has more than 40 years of experience in fiber optic test equipment and systems research, calibration, and product development, and is an international public speaker on fiber optic test and measurement, inspection, materials, and instruments. Goldstein has been an engineer at Fluke Networks since 2000. Fluke Networks, based in Everett, is a worldwide leader in certification, troubleshooting, and installation tools for professionals who install and maintain critical network cabling infrastructure.
The Northwest Maritime Center has received gifts from maritime industry leaders, Saltchuk companies Foss Maritime, TOTE, and NorthStar Energy ($500,0000) and Lake Union Drydock ($200,000) in support of Maritime High School, an innovative, project-based learning school within the Highline Public School District. Company founders and leadership have pledged an additional $150,000. Maritime High School opened last fall to a class of 35 students. Funding from Saltchuk and Lake Union Drydock will support start-up costs for the first four years, and allow the school to grow to 400 students by 2025. Graduates will be equally prepared to enter into the maritime workforce or continue their education at a two or four-year college. The gifts also provide momentum toward a $7.5 million goal set by the Northwest Maritime Center to support the first four years of the school. Jason Childs is president and CEO of Saltchuk Marine. Lake Union Drydock is an integral part of Seattle's maritime industry. Bruce Jones, chairman, and Hobie Stebbins, president and CEO, are third-generation leaders of the 100+-year-old business. Maritime High School is currently accepting applications from incoming ninth and 10th graders for the 2022-23 school year. Admission is open to all students in Washington state. Seattle-based Impinj, a RAIN RFID provider, announced that Christina Balam has joined Impinj as vice president of human resources. Balam has more than 15 years experience leading people and talent organizations. Prior to joining Impinj she served as vice president of human resources with NetMotion Software. Balam will oversee the company's investment in people and culture, leading programs and processes that support global talent acquisition and employee satisfaction and performance. Prior to Impinj, Balam led the HR program at NetMotion, where she partnered closely with leadership and employees to improve culture and retention, drive recruitment and develop international teams. Her efforts resulted in two consecutive Seattle Business Magazine 100 Best Companies to Work For awards in 2019 and 2020. Previously, she held head of HR roles for Point Inside and Akona (acquired by iSoftStone). Balam holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Washington State University.

Seattle-based AuthenticID, a global leader in identity proofing and fraud prevention solutions, announced the appointment of banking leader Mary Harman to its board, effective April 15, 2022. As an executive at Bank of America, Harman held several senior leadership roles and established a new cross-bank payment strategy to drive the multi-billion payments-related business across retail, small business, and corporate clients. She also is an advocate for advanced technologies with a track record of partnering with innovative companies to modernize and transform mainline industries. Harman has two decades of private equity investing in transformational technologies and has served on over 20 corporate boards. Harman was chairman of the board for EWS (Early Warning Services), the consortium of major US banks that created and operate the Zelle payment platform.

Emerald Downs has hired Bill Downes as track announcer for its 2022 live racing season, beginning May 15. Downes succeeds Tom Harris, who recently stepped down to spend more time with his family. A Chicago native, Downes brings an extensive announcing resume to Emerald Downs. He served as Indiana Grand track announcer from 2013 to 2021, and before that called races at Ellis Park, Beulah Park, Presque Isle Downs, and River Downs. He also was back-up announcer at Churchill Downs. Downes becomes just the fourth announcer in the track's 27-year history. Robert Geller was in the announcer's booth from 1996 to 2015, followed by Matt Dinerman (2015-2017) and Harris (2018-2021).
Bellevue City Manager Brad Miyake announced the city has hired Diane Carlson as a deputy city manager. Most recently, Carlson served as the capital division director for King County Metro. From 2002 to 2012, Carlson served as the city of Bellevue's government relations director, before taking a position with King County. She led regional initiatives for the office of County Executive Dow Constantine for over six years before taking over Metro's capital division. Prior to working for Bellevue, Carlson worked for the state Department of Transportation as director of planning, advocacy and initiatives, and for the Association of Washington Cities as senior manager for transportation.
Sherri Berdine has been named director of tribal relations at the University of Washington, UW Vice President for External Affairs Randy Hodgins announced. The director of tribal relations reports directly to the president and to the vice president for external affairs and manages the government-to-government relationships between the UW and the American Indian tribes throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest. Berdine, who is Unangan (Aleut), brings more than 10 years of experience in tribal affairs, government relations and project management to her new role, having served as a federal representative and tribal liaison for 15 government agencies and departmental programs under two presidential administrations. Berdine spent a decade at Kauffman & Associates in Washington, D.C., where she managed federal contracts aimed at improving health care, education and other socio-economic disparities for American Indian and Alaska Native communities. She also previously served on U.S. Sen. Patty Murray's staff. Berdine is a graduate of the UW with bachelor's degrees in sociology and American Indian Studies, and she earned a Master of Jurisprudence in Indian Law from the University of Tulsa College of Law.
