SDA meeting May 23 on SR 520 project

Daniele Dunjic with the Washington State Department of Transportation will talk about the SR 520 corridor project at 5:30 p.m. May 23 at the Best Western Executive Inn in Seattle. The program is hosted by the Society for Design Administration.

Dunjic, an assistant project engineer, will discuss design and construction on the $4.13 billion bridge replacement and HOV program.

Kenneth Frampton to speak at UW

Architect Kenneth Frampton will give a free lecture entitled “Critical Regionalism Revisited” at 6:30 p.m. May 16 at Architecture Hall 147 on the University of Washington Seattle campus, with a reception in Architecture Hall 250 at 5:30 p.m.

The lecture is part of the UW Department of Architecture’s spring lecture series, and is co-sponsored by Olson Kundig Architects and the Simpson Center for the Humanities.

Frampton is an architect, critic, historian and a professor in the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University in New York City.

His books on 20th century architecture include “Modern Architecture: A Critical History.” He became prominent in architectural education with an essay “Towards a Critical Regionalism.”

SMPS social media workshop tomorrow

SMPS Seattle will hold a workshop on effective social media strategies for architecture, engineering and construction firms from 3:30 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Harbor Club at 801 Second Ave. in Seattle.

Blaine Millet, president and chief advocate at WOM10 business strategy firm, will talk about what marketers and business development professionals need to know to get business by tweeting, liking and getting LinkedIn.

AIA civic design awards May 23

The American Institute of Architects Washington Council will hold its 2013 Civic Design Awards banquet at 7:30 p.m. May 23 at the Red Lion Fifth Avenue in Seattle.

Architect and former Seattle City Councilman Peter Steinbrueck is the speaker. AIA|WA Executive Director Stan Bowman is the host.

Cost is $75, which includes dinner and a cocktail hour, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Opening on Ballard landmark board

The city of Seattle is accepting applications until May 16 for an opening on the Ballard Avenue Landmark District Board. Applicants must be a Ballard historian or have a demonstrated interest in the community.

The board regulates changes to the external appearance of buildings, structures and public rights-of-way.

SAF wants entries for model exhibit

The Seattle Architecture Foundation is accepting 3D models, project boards and other entries for its 16th Annual Model Exhibit entitled “World/City.”

Entries must be submitted by May 31 and respond to this year’s theme: global relationships and influences that impact urban development and design.

AIA Seattle class on radiant heating

AIA Seattle will hold a class on “The Evolution of Radiant Heating” at noon May 15 at 1911 First Ave. in Seattle. Bob Mohr, regional sales manager with Warmboard, will discuss the history of radiant heating, the physics behind it, and commercial and residential applications.

May 14 event on Kirkland corridor

The Kirkland Business Roundtable will take comments on the Cross Kirkland Corridor master plan at a meeting at 7:30 a.m. May 14 at the Eastside Tennis Center at 10822 117th Place N.E. in Kirkland.

Kirkland Mayor Joan McBride and City Manager Kurt Triplett will talk about the corridor: a 5.75-mile abandoned BNSF railroad line that traverses Kirkland. The city bought it to create a trail for pedestrians and bicyclists that also accommodates transit.

Lisa Picard, executive vice president for Skanska USA, will describe her experience developing a building adjacent to the Burke-Gilman Trail and the benefits a corridor can offer businesses and investors. The Berger Partnership will present early concepts for the Kirkland corridor.

History tour this weekend in Tacoma

The Tacoma Historical Society will offer tours of north Tacoma historic buildings from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The tours will include Stadium High School, First Presbyterian Church and South Chapel, Metzger House and other homes in the Stadium/North Slope districts.

Tickets are $20 and will be available at First Presbyterian Church, 102 Tacoma Ave. S., on the day of the tour. Tickets include a tour map.

Honor Jane Jacobs: walk this weekend

On Saturday and Sunday, Feet First is organizing Jane's Walks, 13 free walks in Seattle and Edmonds that explore history, architecture, planning and neighborhood personalities.

The walks are part of an international program designed to celebrate Jane Jacobs, an urbanist who wrote “The Death and Life of Great American Cities.”

DCI celebrates silver anniversary

DCI Engineers, a Seattle-based civil and structural consulting firm, celebrated 25 years in business on April 8.

The firm was founded by Mark D'Amato and Guy Conversano as D'Amato Conversano in 1988 in the basement of D'Amato's house in Kirkland.

It now has more than 180 employees, with offices also in Spokane, Portland, Eugene, San Diego, San Francisco, Irvine, Calif., and Austin, Texas

Among its notable projects are Schnitzer West's The Bravern in Bellevue, and American Life's Home Plate and Stadium Innovation Center in Seattle.

‘Dabble Lab' opens at OKA workspace

Olson Kundig Architects has a new installation titled “Dabble Lab” through June 30 at its [storefront] experimental workspace at 406 Occidental Ave. S. in Seattle.

Dabble Lab is offering free workshops where you can learn a new skill or explore an interest. Sessions last about two hours and are available weekdays about noon and in the evenings.

Classes will cover topics ranging from contour drawing to fixing a bicycle tire to chicken wrangling.

Tour des Engineers bike ride May 18

The fifth annual Tour des Engineers bike ride around Whidbey Island is May 18. Riders meet from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Mukilteo Lighthouse Park.

The ride is sponsored by HWA GeoSciences and Redmond Cycling Club. It is open to people in engineering, architecture and contracting, and their friends and clients.

Riders can go on a 25-mile loop through Bayview and Langley, or a 50-mile loop through Greenbank. Cost is $25 in advance or $30 on ride day. Register at http://hwageo.com/tde.html.

MAS program May 9 on capital projects

Chris Cargill of the Washington Policy Center will discuss the state budget and major Eastern Washingon capital projects slated for funding at 11:30 a.m. May 9 at The Lincoln Center in Spokane. The event is sponsored by Marketing Associates of Spokane.

UW Tacoma students can use FabLab

FabLab, a high-tech workshop and fabrication studio in Tacoma, is providing facilities, equipment and expertise in 3D printing, laser-cutting, computer-controlled tools and conventional shop tools to the University of Washington|Tacoma Institute of Technology.

The UWT is offering classes at FabLab, including “TCES 490, How to Build (Almost) Anything.”

Braitmayer leads U.S. Access Board

Architect Karen Braitmayer was elected chair of the U.S. Access Board, a federal agency that ensures access to federally funded facilities and provides information on accessible design. President Barack Obama appointed her to the board in 2010.

Braitmayer is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and founder of Karen Braitmayer, a Seattle architectural firm specializing in accessibility and accessible design.

She advises state agencies, local governments, school districts, developers and architects on accessibility for housing, commercial, retail, institutional and educational projects.







Prince-Ramus to speak in Seattle

Internationally known architect Joshua Prince-Ramus will give a free talk entitled “Critical Naivete” at 10 a.m. May 8. at Seattle Design Center, 5701 Sixth Ave. S.

He worked with Rem Koolhaas on the design of the Seattle Central Library, which was hailed as Time magazine's 2004 Building of the Year.

Prince-Ramus was the founding partner of OMA New York, the American affiliate of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture/Rem Koolhaas. In 2006, he repositioned the firm as REX, a think-tank of designers from diverse backgrounds.

His lecture will focus on how the firm comes up with solutions.

The talk is part of the Design Center's May 8-9 Premiere Northwest trade conference for interior designers and architects, but the lecture is open to the public. To register, call (206) 762-1200, ext. 1.

New members needed for landmarks board

The city of Seattle is seeking two new members to serve on the Landmarks Preservation Board in an at-large position and a structural engineer position.

The board makes recommendations to the City Council for landmark designation and reviews alterations to designated features of landmark properties.

Applicants must be Seattle residents.

Kundig lectures in Spokane this week

Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects of Seattle will give a free talk at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow as part of the Visiting Artists Lecture Series at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture at 2316 W. First Ave. in Spokane.

A no-host beer and wine reception will follow.

The museum said the award-winning architect is noted for his Modernist architectural designs. His father, Moritz Kundig, is an AIA Spokane member.
