A foundation with local,
global missions

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives.

In the United States, the foundation seeks to improve education so all young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential. In developing countries, the foundation focuses on improving people’s health with vaccines and other life-saving tools to give them a chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty.

As the foundation’s work spans the globe, it is also deeply committed to improving the lives of families and children in Washington state, where the Gates family has lived for generations.

The foundation has invested more than $3 billion locally, including more than $800 million though its Community Grants program to reduce family homelessness, ensure a quality education (from pre-K through college completion), and support the region’s most vulnerable children and families.

The foundation also invests in the region’s global health leaders — such as PATH, the University of Washington and Seattle BioMed — which are focused on improving lives around the world.

Creating a place to solve the world’s challenges
The lower elements of the buildings support the neighborhood by providing space for wide sidewalks, while the buildings themselves are rotated in different directions — like arms reaching out to the world.

Campus was no ordinary construction project
Some of the challenges in building the foundation’s headquarters included large cantilever sections, complex curves, and a site packed with cranes, personnel and equipment.

Engineering makes campus efficient and quiet
Designers used a sound modeling lab to identify which materials would
reduce noise the most in the offices.

More than meets the eye — below ground
Hidden civil and site structural work provide the backbone for the new campus.
